A Pedacito of Libertee Grounds in Philadelphia

Updated: Jun 19, 2022

Located in the expanding neighborhood of Fairmount in Philadelphia, PA - just a few blocks from Temple University - Libertee Grounds has brought a creative spin to your local bar. Described as a hyper-local brewery, the bar has 30+ beers, wines, and ciders that all derive from the city of brotherly love. Aside from their extensive drink menu, the bar widens the patron’s tastebuds with their exquisite Pan-Asian cuisine. The food is influenced by several Asian countries - taking on an Eastern flair to traditional Western cuisine. If the drinks and food aren’t enough to entice you, the bar has an entire mini-golf course in their basement. And yes, drinking while playing is highly encouraged here!

I heard about Libertee from a random TikTok that appeared on my “For You” page. My boyfriend is looking to move to Philly this summer, so we’ve been visiting more often than usual. We are always looking for new neighborhoods to explore or activities to enjoy. This past Saturday, we decided to check out Libertee since we had never ventured into North Philly. It was a short ride on the SEPTA from Center City, making it an easy commute for city locals or Jersey travelers like us. At $10 per person to enter, it’s definitely on the more affordable side, which makes it a great place for college students or young adults to spend a night out.

When first entering Libertee, you will be prompted with COVID safety precautions (such as temperature checks) before being escorted to the bar area. Each party is required to make a reservation before arrival. But if you get there a little early as we did, they are super accommodating! Libertee not only has an indoor bar but also a small beer garden that is available upon request - if the weather permits. Then, you will be taken to your table where you can order food and drinks for up to 90 minutes.

If you are looking to play golf during your visit, you will be given a card about 30-45 minutes before your reservation is over. The card is your time slot for mini-golf, and an attendant will come to your table to make sure that you have closed your tab before moving downstairs. You can order a cocktail-to-go and bring it downstairs if you are still in the mood to drink a little more - just don’t sip during game-play. To-go cocktails are reserved for after your 10-hole game is finished due to COVID-19. All guests must keep their masks on before hitting the put-and-play area to ensure safety and state guidelines are being met.

Once you’re downstairs, it’s all about being competitive. With 10 Philly-inspired golf holes, you can have fun with your group no matter what your skill level might be. If you have a competitive streak, grab a scorecard and see who does best. Or, if you’re more casual about gameplay, you can skip the score and just play for fun. I am certainly not a professional golfer, let alone a mini-golfer, but I had a lot of fun navigating the different courses. I think it’s great that Libertee also gives you an entire hour to play mini-golf, so you can go back and re-do holes if you feel like you didn’t give it your best swing.

I think my favorite part about Libertee was the local atmosphere. It is a new, small business that I would love to support again. Especially with the pandemic, it has been increasingly important to help your local shops, bars, and eateries. The food was mainly portioned as an appetizer-style, but it packed the perfect punch with flavors and textures. I highly recommend the Kimchi Mac & Cheese Bites! It was the perfect snack to have while hanging out in the tasting room. The beers were also great - my favorite was the ‘Lil Sunshine, a fruity cider that had notes of apples and oranges. They had a range of beers from sour, to dark and roasty, to fruity. They even had beers that had notes of spice. It was truly a beer lover’s paradise. There is guaranteed to be at least one beer for everyone in your group.

As I have documented many times on Pedacitos, I love to try new things. The concept of a hyper-local brewery infused with a fan-favorite activity is the perfect combination for a Saturday afternoon with friends - and is something I’ve never seen before. I think it’s important to (safely) spice up your free time and try something new whenever it’s possible. With Libertee Grounds, you can embrace your favorite childhood game with an adult-like twist. The combination could not be more perfect!
