A Pedacito of Spring Lake, New Jersey

Updated: Jun 19, 2022

When you think of the Jersey Shore, you probably are taken back to a time of MTV reality shows, mile-long boardwalks, and most likely, Seaside Heights. As a New Jersey native, I can confirm that the Jersey Shore is much more than Seaside Heights (which is not a snub at this popular beach spot, I might add).

Most of the notable Jersey Shore beaches are located in Ocean City, such as Long Beach Island and Point Pleasant. There are also the South Jersey favorites in Atlantic County, like Atlantic City, Brigantine, and Ventor City. However, I want to discuss a beach that I love and think needs some recognition- that resides in neither of these two counties.

Spring Lake is a beach that is situated in Monmouth County, New Jersey, not far from summer hotspots like Belmar and Asbury Park. While I love Belmar and Asbury Park, I believe that Spring Lake is a great place to dwell in the hot sun during the summer months.

For starters, it’s an exceptionally clean beach. Which I will admit, is pretty hard to find in New Jersey. Most New Jersey beaches are very nice, and I feel lucky to have grown up a short driving distance from America’s most famous beaches. However, that doesn’t negate the fact that many of the beaches have lost their cleanliness in recent years. Spring Lake has never lost its touch though, they have provided a clean beach year after year.

If you’re a Spring Lake local, you might be asking why I would promote a beach that isn’t free and is quite expensive to visit. In comparison, yes, Spring Lake is a bit pricey. At about $10 for a day pass, I know a lot of Jersey beach go-ers might lean towards less expensive spots like Belmar or Wildwood.

However, the beach quality at Spring Lake is worth the price, in my opinion. As mentioned, it’s super clean, but it’s also very private. The beach is usually frequented by small families or older people, making it a relaxing place to go to. I have had many encounters at the beach when I’m just trying to catch a few rays and maybe even take a quick nap when suddenly a beach ball or someone’s umbrella comes flying at me. That’s not the case at Spring Lake.

In being a more reclusive beach, Spring Lake brings a calming atmosphere that is hard to get in New Jersey. Per capita, New Jersey is one of the most populated states in America, compared to the space we have. It’s pretty hard to go anywhere and feel like you have the entire space to yourself. At Spring Lake, you truly feel like the king of the castle, where you’re free to relax and have your zen time near the water.

Spring Lake also has a nice boardwalk for those who like to walk beside the beach or ride bikes. My parents love the boardwalk in Spring Lake because it’s quite long and spacious. You don’t have hundreds of vendors lining the boardwalk or a tram car trying to catch you off balance at any moment. There are some eateries and novelty shops on the boardwalk, so it’s not just an open space. Rather, things are more strategically placed to create a relaxing walk for families and people of all ages.

New Jersey has some of the best beaches that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting, so this post is in no way a discouragement for anyone who has a favorite Jersey Shore spot. I think all of the beaches are wonderful in their own way. When I want to spend time with friends and get some great food and drinks after laying in the sun, Belmar is my go-to.

When I want to spend a weekend trip, I love to go to Wildwood or Atlantic City. If I want to take a walk along the boardwalk, I like Seaside Heights or Asbury Park. There are perks to every beach in this state. Personally, however, I think the ambiance that exudes from Spring Lake is something that should be recognized. I consider it a hidden gem that everyone should experience at least once.
